Getting Started
You know you want to go backpacking, but where to begin? Well, first you have to know what you are getting into. Secondly, you must know where you are going and what you will need. And thirdly, you must prepare for all the situations that you may come across. Preparation is the key in making your trip a success.
Know What You’re Getting Into
Without knowing anything about backpacking, your first trip should be to the library or to the local backpacking organizations. Gain knowledge on the basics of what backpacking entails so that you can gauge whether you are ready for it. Do training so that you can pick up on the techniques that you will need when you are out in the wilderness. Go on short trips with your organization so that you can get a feel for it before setting out alone. Make sure to keep yourself in top physical condition because you will be testing the limits of your body when you undertake this endeavor.
Plan Ahead
Planning is essential to making the difference in your trip. You will need to know where you are going, how long it will take you, and what equipment you will need for the journey. Pack what you will need, but try to keep your weight as light as possible. There is nothing that will tire you out more quickly than carrying around unneeded weight in your pack. Plan out how long your trip will be so that you can safely pack what you will need to survive. Do not under-pack essentials because you never know when an emergency will arise. Practice with your gear before heading out. You do not want to be out in the wilderness and discover that you do not know how to use that expensive compass that you bought.
Buddy Up
It may be wiser to choose a hiking partner to do the hike with you. Having two people will allow you each to keep an eye on the other and allow you an immediate person to help in case of emergency. Hiking partners can help the hike go faster and smoother. In any case, make sure someone else knows where you are headed and when you are expected at certain points. If you get lost, someone will know where to look for you.
