Hiking with Kids
You love hiking, and now you have a family. What better way to share your love with your children than to take them along on the hike? Before you go dragging your son or daughter along with you, there are some things you need to know. Making allowances for your brood will allow the vacation to be more enjoyable and actually make the experience pleasurable for both you and your children.
Location
Granted, you are not going to be able to make the same two-week, treacherous hike that you made before your children were born, but you can still enjoy backpacking. Choose a location that you can easily get to and that is easily accessible to a more populated area. That way you can be able to get in and out quickly if there is an emergency. Do not be concerned that you will not be able to track deeply into the wild with your children. It is the fact that you are making the journey with your children, not the length of time it takes you to cover the distance.
Time Management
Although you used to be able to cover the distance in an hour, it may take you three with your children. This is okay. Your children move slower and will want to stop more than you, but let them. This will allow you time to deepen the connection with your children and actually create wonderful memories for the both of you. Enjoy the nature around you rather than going at breakneck speed. Do not judge your achievement in how much ground you covered, but what you did and saw along the way.
Pack Weight
Taking along your little ones means also taking along their gear. You will need to keep this in mind when setting out. Your back will be weighed down with your children’s food, supplies, and necessities. In some cases, you may also be carrying the child yourself rather than letting them walk, so take that into account when planning. Try to lighten your own supplies so that the added weight does not put so much of a strain on you.
