Reducing the Load

When hiking, the worst thing to impact your hike would be a heavy pack. The added strain of weight on your back can cause pain, tiredness, and slow down your progress on the hike. By learning to reduce this weight, it will help you in the long run and make your journey more enjoyable.

Light Products

When choosing gear, find the lightest and most durable products you can buy. Do not trade quality for lightweight, however. You must be able to use these products for a long time in order for them to be cost-effective and useful. Light alternatives to the normal gear can be very useful in lightening your pack. Also, pack with consideration of the season. You do not need a heavy tent or a heavy blanket if you’re going to be hiking in the middle of summer. The same goes for extra clothes. Do not trade good planning for a light pack, but also do not pack more than will be useful on your hike.

Measure What You Need

You are not going to need the thirty-two ounce bottle of sunscreen if you’re on a two-day hike. While it may be good to pack a little more than you need, do not be so overly cautious that you are wasting space on unneeded gear. Measure out exact amounts of your products, allowing a little extra for emergencies, and store them in small containers so that you can reduce wasted space. Also, when storing water, only carry what you need. If you’ll be able to get to a refill station along the way, carry enough to get you to that point with a little extra in case of emergencies.

Multiple Uses

Be aware that some of your gear can double up for more than one use. Dental floss can be used as thread when sewing. A Swiss Army knife is an all-in-one tool. You can find many uses for your gear as long as you think about it. There’s no need to bring along a pillow when stuffing your clothes in a bag will work just fine. Look at what you have and think up inventive ways to use it.
