Find a Trail

Whether it is a local trail or one half-way across the country, one of the major components of planning your vacation is to choose which trail you want to hike. By doing some research and planning ahead, you will be able to choose a trail that is right for you.

What You Will Do

Are you planning on doing a straight hike? Will you be wanting to do some fishing or climbing along the way? Do you have a limitation of how far away from home you want to go? All these are questions you must ask yourself when choosing a trail. You do not want to choose a trail that is on the other side of the country when you need to be in the immediate vicinity of your home in case of emergency. You do not want to choose a flat trail if your passion is climbing. Choose a trail that best suits your needs.

National Park or Just Down the Street

The National Park system allows for multiple trail experiences. Mount Rainier in Washington State is a great choice for hiking with your children. Yellowstone National Park has some great places to fly-fish. The Great Smoky Mountains give opportunities to mountain bike. These locations serve specialized purposes that you may have. Decide if you want to search out specific locations based on the activities that you will be doing along the trail.

Extended Vacations or Not

It may be possible to plan a one-day hike rather than an extended vacation. This will serve you well if you have to be in the immediate vicinity of home, if you do not like extended hiking, or if you just want to have a change of scenery in the middle of the month. Look around at the local areas to see what is available and how it may best serve you. If you would rather go on an extended vacation, seek out locations that allow for a different challenge than you would normally get. If there are no local areas that allow for the kinds of activities you are looking for, look outward. Sometimes you can get to trails with only a little added driving and it will make all the difference in your vacation.
